This article examines the devotional practices of indigenous and workers in the Atacama Desert, who—embedded in a complex scenario of national identities, proletarianization, and secularization—are mobilized in their actions between tradition and modernity. By paying attention to their cultic expressions, we deepen research on the ceremonies of workers who ritually gather at the fiesta of the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Carmen de La Tirana, reenacting a series of religious performances in which dance and music are allowed during the sacred time of the fiesta, thus altering their hard work in the saltpeter mines of Tamarugal and mitigating conflicts over nationality
