No fully satisfactory explanation has yet been offered for the Spanish recourse to spurious se instead of dative le. Three distinct questions are at issue: the failure of le to cluster with accusative lo; the number of grammatically distinct se's in Spanish; and their/its respective value(s). The analysis proposed here deals coherently with all three: the various uses of single se follow from the interaction of its meaning with the inferential economy imposed on clitics by the verbal complex of which they are a part
