Plus d'un siecle apres sa naissance dans les bas quartiers de Buenos Aires et de Montevideo, le tango est devenu une musique mondiale, pratiquee et ecoutee dans les grandes villes, bien que toujours percue comme la musique nationale de l'Argentine, ou plus generalement comme une musique latino, exotique et un peu vieillote. Cet article retrace les principales etapes de l'histoire du tango, ses diverses origines et significations avant d'aborder une etude du phenomene recent de l'engouement pour ce genre musical en prenant le cas de la ville de Richmond dans l'Etat d'Indiana (USA)
