The Annual Academy Dinners of Ashfield, Massachusetts were a forum for educational issues, and, in later years, for a wide range of political themes. G. Stanley Hall, a native of Ashfield, addressed these gatherings for eighteen of the twenty-five years they were held. Although they were of strong personal interest to Hall, it is evident that the Dinners played a role in the development of his professional life as well. The period encompassed by Ashfield's Academy Dinners follows Hall through his early professional career at the Johns Hopkins to his maturity as president of Clark University. They also give us a parallel glimpse of Hall as a person – his motivations and interactions with others – in a rural New England town at the end of the nineteenth century.
