Gémez Pereira published a book in 1554 in which he proposed the thesis of animal automatism. This work included proofs of animal insensitivity and a mechanistic model of animal behavior. This model explained animal behavior, before Descartes, on the basis of purely mechanical systems. Pereira's work represents a critical appraisal of the traditional scholastic theory of the animal mind, as well as one of the first efforts to develop a model of animal behavior based on empirical observation and physiological knowledge.
