Henry VIII and the Crisis of Generativity Although Henry VIII has long fascinated historians, biographers, and dramatists, detailed psychological studies about him are remarkably few in number, considering the amount of data available.I Because his personal life was so intertwined with historical events whose ripples still affect us, his biographers have struggled to unravel his motives, particularly in connection with his divorce from Catherine of Aragon and his marriage to Anne Boleyn, for this was the pivotal event upon which English history and his own personal development turned. Psychoanalytic study of these events can expand our understanding of the character of Henry VIII and, in addition, shed light upon the psychology of early middle age, a stage of life relatively neglected in studies of personality development.2 Erikson alludes briefly to the early middle years in his work on the life cycle. He speaks of a stage of generativity, the need to be needed, which results in the essential quality ofCare ... the widening concern for what has been generated by love, necessity, or accident. The alternative is stagnation and self-absorption, in which the person becomes his own infant and pet.3 Although Erikson's generativity is linked to parenthood, he also has in mind its implications for creativity and, in fact, for all of a person's works. Onlyjaques has given a detailed description of the years from thirty-five to forty as a critical phase with its own unique dynamics and set of distinctive behavioral manifestations.4
