L'A. porte son attention sur la notion de culture politique. Il souligne que cette notion doit etre mise en parallele avec celles de socialisation, de valeurs, d'ideologie. Il passe en revue, de facon critique, les principaux ouvrages qui, aux Etats-Unis, se sont efforces d'etudier le developpement et la formation des cultures politiques. Il montre comment les historiens americains apprehendent les causes de la Revolution americaine, la naissance et le developpement du republicanisme americain ou encore les causes du declenchement de la Guerre de Secession
