Drought and Economic Distress: South Africa in the I800s The story of humankind's struggle with climatic adversities is one of the more prominent themes in the world's stock of documentary, religious, and mythological literature. Among the most frequent and recurring phenomena associated with adverse weather is drought, most simply and economically defined as an extended period of deficient precipitation relative to normal. A corollary to this definition suggests that drought can occur almost anywhere in the world because the natural variability of precipitation is a reliable statistical characteristic of climate. 1
