Family and Feudal Ties in Poitou, 1100-I300 Throughout the Middle Ages, the family remained an essential unit of public life, ties of kinship finding abundant nourishment in feudal soil. However, the family did experience significant structural changes, leading Newman recently to dub it, force la plus puissante et la plus stable du XIIe et XIIIe siecles. In the ceaselessly changing society of these years he has found one constant-l'esprit de famille. Signs of the influence of blood relationships are a common feature of contemporary sources. From his baptism with a name traditional in his family, to his interment in the family's favored cemetery, the noble of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries found his place in society as a member of a kinship group. The last two decades have produced numerous works on the medieval family, examining its structure, its membership, its size, and the changes it underwent as a result of economic fluctuations, religious influences, and the development of a hereditary nobility.1 The understanding thus achieved paves the way for studies which attempt to determine the family's relationship to other units and systems of social organization
