This article intends to examine some questions referring to the relations between power, book production, and reading in the time of medieval book manuscripts, reflecting on this question through an analysis of Portuguese ancestry books of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. In the first part of the article I examine the relationship between power, society, and the book manuscript. In the second part, I analyze the relationship between power, society, and the book as an object submitted to social forms of control
