This article examines the assimilation of racial discourse in Brazilian regionalist literature in the first decades of the twentieth century, focusing on the convergence between the discourses of sociology and literary fiction. By virtue of its incorporation into literary plots concerned with describing the practices, attitudes, and ways of life of the poor in the Brazilian backlands, the discourse of the social sciences, transformed into a popularized and diffuse worldview, participated actively in the construction of the image of the people by the country's intellectual elite. This image, with its stress on the mestizo condition, questioned the racially mixed poor's ability to adapt to modernity
