There are at least three angles from which to view nationalism in the work of Machado de Assis. In this essay, those angles are critically studied and revised in order to show that there is a new way of reading the issue of nationalism in Machado de Assis' work. It is argued that when he chose to publish Americanas, in 1875, and thereby retake a cultural tradition in which the first steps of a definite nationalism in Brazilian literature are rooted, Machado was answering a still present tendency in the tastes of the day
