Recently there has been a renewal of interest in the work by Theophilus, De diversis artibus. C. R. Dodwell, of Trinity College, Cambridge University, after a thorough study of the manuscripts, has edited both the Latin text and an English translation thereof on facing pages, following a long Introduction.1 Another translation by John G. Hawthorne and Cyril Stanley Smith appeared in this country in 1963.2 Finally, in this periodical Lynn White, jr., in a review article Redivivus,3 added to both previous publications. Dodwell showed that Theophilus wrote in the first half of the twelfth century; White suggests the more precise date, 1222-23. On page 225 White refers in complimentary terms to Theophilus's technical vocabulary, and on the next page he cites Ducange concerning another matter.
