Wu Ch'i-chiin (1789-1847) was an official of the Ch'ing period (1644-1911) who was active during the first half of the nineteenth century. He also was the author of two remarkable technical books written before the modern Western impact. The first of these was Tien-nan k'uang-ch'ang t'u-liieh (An Illustrated Summary of the Mines of Yunnan),l published in 1845; the other was Chih-wu ming shih t'u-k'ao (An Illustrated Study of the Terminology and Actuality of Plants),2 published posthumously in 1848. The latter of these two books, in which Wu describes 1,714 different plants, represents the labor of many decades, truly the result of a lifelong avocation; it is justly the more famous work with which Wu's name has been associated
