PREFACE In 1975 Ian Morley, a man of considerable experience in the mining industry, began work on a history of the Australian sand mining industry. I agreed to supervize the writing of the history. Mr Morley's research into both oral and written sources was excellent. He knew the industry well; he took many tape recordings of discussions, and he read every piece of written material available. When the writing had been completed in 1979, it was of such a standard as to be recommended for a Master of Arts degree. Unfortunately, as Mr Morley had done all his earlier university studies in engineering, he was not able to submit his manuscript for an M.A. degree. Black Sands is the history of sand mining on the eastern coast of Australia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It covers the technical, business, and political aspects of the mining. Apart from this thoroughness the manuscript is eminently readable, an important factor in the publication of a book which deals with a highly technical subject. In short, the book should have an appeal to the mining engineer, the mining entrepreneur, and to the general reader
