TO LOOK AT 200 YEARS of political organization on the Great Plains requires that we use the methods of ethnohistory for most of the first 100 years. I understand these methods to consist of essentially two steps. One, we simply project the present back onto the past, hoping to filter out of our projection whatever it is that was caused by contact with current events-usually meaning a situation of acculturation-or the presence of a dominant society. One should be wary of this approach-it is primarily art and little if any science. I give you an example, one which I am going to develop in depth later
