If towns on a plain are regarded as points on a map then the recent work on the analysis of pattern using distances between points may be used to gain possible insights into the nature of the process leading to the town locations. Furthermore, if attention focuses on the direction of the nearest neighboring town, then the original axes of migration may be displayed. These ideas are illustrated in the context of a plain in Argentina
