T pHE Kelleys Island community has been passing through a period of adjustment consequent upon the loss in 1941 of its leading supporting industry-the quarrying of limestone. For many years previous the economy of the island had been describable in varying terms of agriculture, commercial fishing, entertainment of the vacationist, and limestone quarrying. Today, the quarries are abandoned, and the farms largely so. The grape and wine industry, which has been declining for some years, offers little promise. Commercial fishing, now one of two leading sources of income, likewise has small chance of greater importance. It is, then, towards increasing the number of resorters, who presently constitute the other leading source of income, that the islanders must turn added effort if their present contracted economy is to be expanded
