D_ URING the past thirty years j considerable progress has been _ ! JJ made in the application of scientific principles in the field of metallurgy. Much of the recent research has been directed not only to the improved uses of various alloys but also to finding new uses of known, but little used, metals. Although the existence of magnesium has been known since 1808, its possibilities for use in industry was not discovered until the last thirty-five years, with most of its uses coming in recent times.
