because it is situated very near the geographical center of Massachusetts. Founded in 1713, after two unsuccessful attempts at settlement, it served as a stopping place in traffic between the coastal towns, especially Boston and the Connecticut Valley towns, particularly Springfield. For many decades Worcester remained a country town much like its neighbors and not much larger than most of them; but by the opening of the Revolutionary period it had already achieved a conspicuous leadership in population and importance. Before the end of the nineteenth century, Worcester had so far expanded within its own town limits that it was crowding upon its boundaries in several places, and had already developed almost continuously populated connections with its own outlying districts like South Worcester, New Worcester, Quinsigamond, and others. Upon the opening of the twentieth century its expansion began affecting appreciably and directly the growth of population of some of its neighboring towns and their suburbanization as satellites of Worcester had begun (Figure 1).
