MX /-ANUFACTURING production in the Soviet Union is at least half that of the United States and the country is clearly the world's second industrial nation.1 Such current importance together with a rapid growth rate makes the distribution of manufacturing and its causes of increasing concern to students of the Soviet economy. The only detailed manufacturing maps available show the distributions as of 1935.2 Newer maps have been small-scaled, show only the general location of selected types of industrial activity, and provide but a vague indication of the relative magnitudes of manufacturing in the various industrial regions and urban centers.
