Y mid-1960, there will be at least 4000 planned shopping centers of various sizes in operation in the United States; hundreds more are being built or proposed.' Daily decisions are being made regarding participation by retailers in these marketing complexes. Millions of dollars are being committed with only experience as a guide. Experience has demonstrated that serious consideration must be given to location decisions regarding planned shopping centers. These decisions must be based not only on retailing experience, but also on market data, and store and shopping center characteristics. Market data are available in varying degrees of quality and sophistication. Many retailing organizations have undertaken research programs to avail themselves of good specialized market data as well as detailed information on their own business and retail outlets. Planned shopping centers are still a rather recent phenomenon. They have been studied from many points of view, and many articles have been written about them. Unfortunately, most of these published accounts are descriptive.2 Consequently, a cooperative effort was launched to seek substantive data on shopping centers which could be reported and shared.3
