T p HE movements of the center of production of the Eastern Interior coal field provide an excellent summary of the shifts in production which have occurred in this field. The shifts which caused the direction and extent of the movement of the center of production can be identified through analysis of changes in the amount of coal produced in the various counties over the years. An examination of the volume of production for each county helps to focus attention on the major producing areas, and a map showing the intensity of production provides a basis for comparison with published material on other coal fields
