T nHE brief but distinctive period of New Zealand history half way through the last century was one of rapid change, one in which completely new forms and kinds of development were inaugurated, and in which many lasting foundations were laid. During the years 1838-1853 both European and Maori patterns of population were rearranged, and emphasis was switched to different areas, new resources, and fresh objectives. The changes brought about in this brief period of little more than one decade were not primarily in the landscape; only here and there and in districts strictly confined was the landscape transformed. The change was much more a change in the methods and aims of pakeha settlement and of institutions -a change that in the succeeding century (and especially the first half of it) was to make possible and to bring about a wholesale transformation of the New Zealand countryside
