The Delfino family came to Mendoza in 1898. They were like thousands of other Spaniards and Italians who had moved across the Atlantic and the Pampas to the foot of the Andes. They joined a relatively small population of people who had lived there for several hundred years. In order to survive, Sr. Delfino began work as a contratista, a labor arrangement in which the land was supplied by the owner while the vineyard was planted by the contratista. In exchange for his labor, Sr. Delfino received all the grapes produced by the vineyard for the first eight years. Thereafter, the owner took over the vineyard
