A monthly meeting of the faculty at West Virginia State College is devoted to an educational discussion, led by a designated member of the faculty, of a topic previously assigned by the Committee on Faculty Seminars. In preparation for the May, 1933, meeting of this faculty, the writer was assigned the task of making a study of the socio-economic background of students of the college, for the value that such a study would have for the faculty in general and for the Committee on College Aims in particular, as well as for use in the consideration of probable revisions of the curriculum and of guidance procedures. The purpose of this article is to present some of the findings of this study in order that the data gathered may supplement, by way of comparison and contrast, the data of somewhat similar studies that have recently appeared concerning the social and economic backgrounds of students at Fisk University,2 Howard University,3 a group of colleges for Negroes,4
