L'A. focalise son attention sur la pratique de l'auto-castration et son interdiction dans le christianisme ancien. Il commence par examiner les positions opposees de saint Justin et de Basile d'Ancyre sur le sujet. Puis il examine les eunuques chretiens et les confronte a la pratique des orthodoxes. Enfin, il pose la question de l'auto-castration comme expression de la continence chretienne en se placant sur le terrain des relations sociales entre ascetes hommes et femmes
