While preparing an English translation with notes of Aduersus Hermogenem, which is soon to be published as a volume of the series Ancient Christian Writers, and an edition of the Latin text which will appear in the collection Stromata edited by Professor Christine Mohrmann and Professor Johannes Quasten, I collected a number of observations which could not easily be included in either publication. In the first place they bear upon the sources of the doctrine of Hermogenes, partly also upon Ter. tullian's refutation
