Les « Definitions d'Hermes Trismegiste a Asclepius » en armenien et en grec prouvent de facon definitive que le gnosticisme―paien, juif et chretien―est ne a Alexandrie vers le debut de l'ere chretienne. On en trouve la trace dans une polemique de Philon a propos de trois classes d'hommes qui pourrait bien viser un groupe de juifs esoteriques mentionnes par Numenius. Le relais a ete pris par des gnostiques juifs et chretiens. Mani etait familier avec cette tripartition et le manicheisme originel etait gnostique et hellenistique. Il ne devait pas grand chose a l'Iran
