When, in 1944, Brazilian composer César Guerra-Peixe joined the Música Viva movement and adhered to dodecaphonism, he was taking on the role of an aesthetically antinational composer, thus breaking with a nationalist tradition founded in the second half of the twentieth-century which continued till the early 1950s. To break with that tradition entailed to propose new musical-aesthetic values to a Brazilian audience used to the nationalistic tuning, the consonances of traditional European music and the rhythms of popular music. In search of such values, Guerra-Peixe launched his "national colour" project, conciliating elements from atonal-serial-dodecaphonic language with elements from traditional tonal music, and from Brazilian urban popular music in particular. Rhythm ranks high among the musical elements privileged by the composer in his aesthetic experiences. Herein I present some strategies developed by Guerra-Peixe in order to furnish his dodecaphonic works with the "national colour" as well as the aesthetic and cultural motivations that have led to those strategies
