Wherever a great deal of importance is attached to personal experience today, people are becoming sensitive to the ways in which we are accustomed to repress sensuality and emotion. We are also becoming increasingly conscious and more intolerant of the pain this suppression causes us, and are making more of an effort to overcome it. Given this situation, it is understandable that Norbert Elias' theory of the civilizing process is undergoing a revival, for it is concerned with the historical genesis of affects of anxiety such as shame and embarrassment, which envelop and inhibit our sensuality and emotionality.1
