democratic opposition in countries of real socialism. The European experience shakes their traditional view of the world, producing a strong defense mechanism. Among the few democratic intellectuals from East Central Europe who don't react to this situation with the usual anti-communist lament are Agnes Heller and Ferenc Feher. While their work clears away the debris left by the revolutionary movement, they also remain committed to the idea of radical emancipation, and directly involved in the political fray. Agnes Heller's exemplary Bonn speech at a protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, in which she lectured the West German Left on conformism, comes to mind.
