The city of Mainz lies on the left bank of the Rhine across from where the Main empties into the current. Mainz is an important railway junction and lies along the main line that, following the contours of the Rhine Valley, runs from Holland to Switzerland. In Mainz the railway lines to Frankfurt am Main and to Mannheim cross the Rhine. The city has a river port and is one of the largest centers of trade on the Upper Rhine. The local industries manufacture machines, railway cars, and ships. Mainz is the center of the Rhine wine trade and of the German sparkling wine industry
