These pages are meant to clarify what I take to be the key issues at stake in Murphy's criticism of Habermas. They are not meant as a defense of any particular interpretation of Habermas, including my own. Nevertheless, I start with Murphy's rather polemical discussion of my short 1988 article, Discourse Ethics and Civil Society, in order to correct certain misinterpretations, to clear the ground and to point to where I believe further work for anyone interested in the topic would be fruitful
