Tout en considérant les relations entre la parenté, la religion et la loi dans le contexte des biotechnologies, cet article se concentre sur les politiques de l'embryon, spécialement du don d'embryon et examine les débats relatifs à son statut, dans le contexte de l'Iran et du chiisme. Il montre que le sens des lois et les valeurs morales attribuées aux embryons humains sont étroitement associés aux concepts de la parenté et de la reproduction. De plus, il affirme que ces politiques et leurs usages sont inscrits en Iran dans plusieurs contextes : la cohérence des positions entre les autorités religieuses, médicales et légales - au croisement du sacré et du séculier -, les institutions politiques et médicales, un ensemble complexe de valeurs et de normes, des intérêts professionnels, comme les choix faits par les individus et l'émergence d'agences commerciales
