After evoking the basic notions of computers, algorithms and models, this article defines Virtual Experimentation, a new approach of scientific knowledge that is complementary to laboratory experimentation. Its advantages are discussed, particularly by means of examples from general relativity, quantal mechanics and fractal geometry, and its drawbacks, related mainly to rounding-off errors and modes of representation, are detailed. A general survey of the state of the art in computing techniques then allows for a concrete description of this concept to be made. Finally, some indications on future developments are given
