The opponents of the liberation of the audiovisual market frequently refer to the existance of an "iron law", according to a deregulated environment it will inveriably lead to an invasion of poor quality american programs on the screen. This article demonstrates that the existance of this "iron law" relies on a banal economic analysis in Europe, the traditional organisation of the television sector, notably the existence of public monopolies and the constitution of monopsone - the E.B.U. - for the procurement of programs to the detriment of production that has penalised the development of a powerful sector of program edition. On the contrary, in America, within the context of fierce competition driven the industry to set up its production from strength to strength, adapted to the diverse tastes of the public. That has allowed it to answer the demand of european markets which, with of competition need more and more programs. If these companies buy american productions in quantity it is because of the quality not because they are sold very cheaply. This the innease "cultural" protectionism in Europe will continue to prevent the development of a true audiovisual production industry
