Mangas (Japanese comic-strips and, by extension, cartoons) have contributed towards changes in cultural relations between young people and adults, and among young people themselves. They provided new weapons in a struggle between age-groups and generations, at a time when media such as comics and television were, on the whole, losing their power as symbols of an identity and an anti-establishment sentiment for young people used to seeing them consumed by adults in the family context. The main medium of appropriation has been television and cartoons, for young children, and comics, for teenagers
