Drawing on developments in the philosophy of ordinary language, the sociology of interaction, ethnomethodology and linguistic pragmatics, the paper argues for a new theoretical paradigm for the analysis of media « texts ». It postulates that communicative intentio- nality is the common ground that structures the nature of the relationship between broadcasters and audiences. Intentionality is retrievable, in texts, via inferential reasoning along lines specified by H.Paul Grice' s theory of communicative intentionality and the logic of conversation. The aim of this theoretical « move » is twofold : to restore the study of the organised meaning of broadcast programmes to its proper place at the heart of media analysis and to displace the theory of ideology as central to that process
