James McGuire: The Representation of the Hermaphroditic Body in the Encyclopédie plates. This study brings together a plurality of discourse - literary, historical, medical and sociological - with the intention of deciphering ideological strategies of encyclopédisme as they manifest themselves in the iconography of three plates of hermaphrodites which appeared in Panckoucke's Supplément of 1776-7. This exploration of the stakes involved in this example of the, literally, reductive textual and pictorial representation of the sexually ambigous body during the Enlightenment serves to revea! what one might refer to as the paradoxically dark side of encyclopedic transparency
