Béatrice Didier: Diderot's Plan of a University. In March 1775, Catherine II commissioned a "plan of study for young people", which gave Diderot an opportunity to write the Plan d'une Université. This work does not draw its inspiration from a knowledge of Russia, which became for him a utopian space onto which he could project the characteristics of a centralised, organised and geometrical Enlightenment space. In its general lines, however, the work has more to say to our own age than to its addressee, and can be seen as providing the foundations of a secular democratic university, open to the new science
