This paper deals with various categories of sound that can be heard in a war context, focusing mainly, but not only, on Livy’s relation of the second Punic War. In the first place, it examines what can be described as the ‘soundtrack’ of a conflict, and especially the different uses of the human voice (diplomatic and religious aspects, part played by fama, rumor and nuntii, linguistic and phonologic aspects). A second part is devoted to such topical situations as exhortations, battles and sieges (among which clamores), devastations and other noisy modes of expression (military punishments, triumphs). Military and narrative strategy is considered in a third part, from an auditory angle: stratagems, dialectic relationship between noise and silence, sight and hearing (with examples such as the Battle of Lake Trasimene), an analysis which ultimately brings to light the notion of ‘sound ekphrasis
