Statius' Thebaid carries out the fusion of a tragic matter and an epic framework. In it the poet combines the tragic principle of a fatal sequence of causes and the epic principle of a providential finality. The themes of tragedy subvert from within the topic of warlike epos : as an illustration of this, we have the treatment of the theme of heredity marked as it is by a sernse of doom. A second element of tragic fate is that of passion : the psychology of the epic warrior appears to be perverted by the model of passionate wrath inspired by Seneca. That adulteration of epic heroism is counterbalanced by the emergence of a tragic heroism founded on wilful self-slaughter, also influenced by Seneca. The denouement of Virgilian inspiration is nevertheless placed under the sign of a return of the world of epos. That conscious knitting together of epic and tragic themes expresses a desire of renewal of the epic genre as well as a more general echo of the sensibility of the time
