Haimonian lekythoi from Delphi, Phokis and West Lokris in a geographical context

In this paper I offer a detailed study of 5 early fifth-century Attic lekythoi from Delphi and contextualise the substantial presence of Haimonian lekythoi at Delphi with respect to other Attic pottery. I review the distribution of Haimonian lekythoi in Phokis and West Lokris, and consider putative geographical connections aiming to address how lekythoi may have arrived at specific locations. I suggest that major sea routes cannot account fully for the inland travel of lekythoi and that we need to conceptualise widespread distribution through overland modes of transport too. I conclude by proposing that localised demand pertaining to the procurement and consumption of fashionable items, such as Haimonian lekythoi, provides another mechanism to account for their wide distribution
