Ms. 23076 of the National Library in Madrid holds the only known copy of the translation into Galician of Giordano Ruffo’s De Medicina Equorum. In spite of our partial knowledge of the fact that the Calabrian veterinarian’s handbook was widely spread both in Latin and in Romance, a new approach to some of the elements in the tradition of such a famous work is useful to notice some of the textual problems arising from the version transmitted by the Madrid codex. This paper pays special attention to the divergent interpretations in some specific passages originated by certain graphic forms shown on the manuscript and focuses on the words included in a set of prescriptions in the Galician translation of Ruffo’s work, words which have been misinterpreted by those who have tried to edit such a complex work
