In Against the Manichaeans (IV, 87-88), Titus of Bostra accuses the Manichaeans of using what Paul says in 1 Co 9,22b, in justification of an accommodating attitude towards the Pagans to avoid death in case of persecution. Titus is alone in holding this accusation against the Manichaeans. Nevertheless such an interpretation of 1 Co 9,22b is not completely unheard of. Considering the quality of Titus’s Manichaean sources, it is utterly possible that some Manichaeans resorted to such an exegesis
