L'exemple d'Hermoupolis, d'après les archives de son Conseil municipal dans les dernières années du règne de Gallien, réunit en un même lieu et sur une courte période, des témoignages concrets et contrastés d'une certaine aisance (pensions versées aux athlètes, grands travaux urbains) et de restrictions non moins certaines (crise de la gymnasiachie, insurrection armée et ses conséquences). De tous ces éléments, il convient de tenir compte dans l'appréciation des crises du II le siècle
