Let there be no mistake, in spite of the above title, the gods did not really eat, except maybe in the banquets of mythology ; conversely they expected that homage should be paid them in return for their benevolent actions in favour of human communities and on consideration of the superior powers they were. And the honours paid to the gods fully integrated the domain of food production and practices through sacrificial rituals and banquets. This being said, can the involvement of divinity in the provinces of the Roman West be measured in the food consumption of the cities ? The question in the first place is to try and estimate the impact of the sacrificial and ceremonial activity on the productions and food consumptions as regards the animal and vegetal world. More particularly examined will be the place of the territorial shrines – that is located on the territory of the cities- in the consumption or even the distribution of food stuffs. Plainly speaking, the question is to see what happened to the meat of the sacrificial animals, which was eaten partly on the spot, partly distributed and sold outside the place of worship. The frequency of sacrifices and banquets organized in the shrines will also be examined. The last chapter of the survey will be devoted to a description of the sacrificial activity such as it can be reconstructed outside the communal temples, in all the spaces of daily life, this through a few examples, that in particular of a village excavated in the border city of the Batavians
