The etymological problem set by the name of Toulouse is here examined. The Celtic hypothesis is discarded, through lack of precise points of comparison. The most illuminating parallels are to be found in th Iberian peninsula : they are modern toponyms (under the form Tolosa) ranging as far as Andalusia and two antique toponyms on the southern side of the Pyrenees, Tolous and Labi-tolosa. Those parallels allow us by way of hypothesis to connect the name of Toulouse with an Aquitan substratum of cognate origine with the non-Indoeuropean languages of the peninsula
