If in Antiquity representation is intrinsically linked to eyesight, the link between the two notions is rather loose: representation can be the mental transcription of vision or on the contrary break away from vision and move towards imagination, towards the inward eye. The point here is to study this emancipation from the real, not in philosophy or rhetoric in general, but in Seneca’s thought in which the ambiguity of the philosophers, the stoics in particular, regarding sight and imagination, blatantly stands out. While condemning imagination in accordance with the Stoic tradition, Seneca must simultaneously admit, as writer and spiritual adviser, the pedagogical and parenetic strength of the latter. The inward eye seems to be restored and even praised for its efficiency while perceived with a certain diffidence. The confrontation between philosophical dogmas and the reality of writing and parenesis brings about the emergence of a living and modern thought which moderates and transforms the philosophical dogmas in their contact with the Roman reality
